Koroska galerija likovnih umetnosti (Art Gallery Slovenj Gradec) hosts international video exhibition Video in Progress 3: Fields of the Performative. The third edition of the project, which in 2011 became a video festival organized by Kolektiva Institute and Photon Gallery, was first presented in 2009 at Kino Siska Centre for Urban Culture in Ljubljana (SI). Since then the project was presented in various forms in Gdansk (PL), Skopje (MK), Torino (IT), Rotterdam (NL) and Rijeka (HR).

The third edition of Video in Progress exhibition project is the result of international competition on the subject of performance for video. 46 selected videos featuring various formal and conceptual premises present heterogeneous interpretation of performance in relation to motion picture within the contemporary visual art.

Everything from regular performance in front of audience in a gallery to an exhibitionist and voyeuristic presentation of a body as an aesthetic object, absurd actions, exploration of identity, social and political roles, subjective views, narratives and the creation of film or documentary atmosphere.

Three works directly address the topic of language and explore various methods of communication. In the performance Different, Zoran Poposki illustrates the influence of a society full of prejudices as to the image of an individual. The performer is, beyond recognition, covered with projections of words that express mainstream society’s view of those who live at its margins. The video Repeat After Me by Marianne Holm Hansen shows two persons in parallel who alternately repeat basic foreign language phrases lifted from a tourist guidebook and thus generate an impossible dialogue. In his video Quiet, Attila Urban uses two parallel pictures in a dialogue, which, with the help of universal gestures, form a peculiar narration.

Interference explores the significance of art within science and science in art, guided by milestones in scientific progress.
Interference 2011-2012 is inspired by The Allegory of the Cave by Plato a philosophic milestone in which the quest for scientific and systematic thought is first set.
For the first part Het Schaduwspel artist were asked to research the function of moving images in a public space. The city centre of Breda will be the stage for eight projections.

Projections can be seen daily 1 - 11 December between 17.00h and 24.00h.

Zoran Poposki's video 'Different' will be screened as part of the DVD Project selection to mark its fifth-year anniversary.

This hour-long presentation features contemporary video works centering around the history of The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1943-1992). Made by artists from ex-Yugoslav republics and provinces, the works contain a multitude of voices and perspectives: from the performative and more politically engaged to the lyrical and humorous. The focus is not on developing an over-arching theme or conclusion but experiencing art from a particular region that is often neglected by the West.

Digital artist and theorist Zoran Poposki will present a video performance at the 11 CYBERFEST International Cyber Art Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 18-23 November 2011. The work will be shown as part of Not So Distant Memory, a video program curated by Boshko Boskovic.

The 11. festival edition is dedicated to the theme Show Us Your Tongue, and includes: exhibitions (media installations and interactive objects), media performances, sound art, educational program (lectures, workshops, movies), video art program, media art for children, and media opera.

According to the statement by the curator Marina Koldobskaya:"Tongues could be simple or complex, archaic or modern, alive and dead, one’s own and somebody else’s. One’s own, native tongue, is, as a rule, but one. We acquire it practically at birth and lose it together with life. If the tongue is lost, everything collapses. Many tongues are not better than one – even builders of the Tower of Babel realized that. The contemporary art is similar to that great construction – tongues got mixed. It has been a few generations already, starting with Pop Art, that artists have been using the language of mass culture and politics, sociology and psychoanalysis, journalism and advertisement, glossy photo and traditional painting, design and graffiti, theater and film, street activism and academic studies, business and outsiderism. A word emerges when a phenomenon emerges; a statement – when there is something to say; a tongue – when there is a community. The international art crown today is not unlike the population of Diaspora: people talk each in their own way, each does his own thing and each lives in his own conditions – and it is no longer really clear what characteristics and what common belief make people recognize their own kind. For how long will art preserve itself without its own speech? And what is capable of giving new vocabulary, syntax and grammar to the contemporary art that has been for several generations already leading the unenviable life of mocker, parodist, doppelganger of the “real life”? New technologies that change the civilization before our own eyes is a challenge that will have to be met; a reality that is worthy of discussion; unlimited possibilities that are impossible not to use. One should answer the question: will the art remain the mocker that would everlastingly stick out its tongue to the “big boys” or will it acquire its own tongue, on which it will say most important words – to itself and to everyone."

A performance in public space by artist Zoran Poposki in front of the Oficerski Dom in Bitola on 11 August 2011 at 8 PM will mark the start of the 6th International Festival of Contemporary Arts AKTO.

AKTO will be held until Sunday, under the motto "(Never) Work", inspired by a graffiti "Ne travaillez jamais" by the French philosopher Guy Debord in the 1950s. The festival, which this year places emphasis on the visual arts and music, announced 30 prominent participants from Macedonia, Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Mexico and Finland, and over twenty famous musicians from Macedonia, Serbia and Canada.

Arts -- Politics -- Economics. New perspectives of the arts

Arts, politics and economics have always existed in a dynamic interdependent relationship, which is, in part, stimulating, and, in part, produces contradictions or even oppositions: The arts are integrated into political and economic functional relationships, but they also appear as political protagonists, whose aesthetic strategies - whether explicit or implicit - reflect societal events or provide guidelines for successful coexistence in society. The spectrum of theoretical debate in the study of the arts ranges from questions concerning the position of the political in the aesthetic and aesthetic forms of expression of the political, to those who devote themselves to the political role of art or discuss the relationship of art and economics.

The interdisciplinary summer school, which incorporates the subjects Art History, Art Education, Musicology, Music Education and Theatre Studies, aims to discuss the following aspects:

How does the political manifest itself in the arts against the background of its dissolution of boundaries and internationalisation?
To what institutional change are the arts subject in the light of (global) structural political and economic changes?
What role does the study of the arts play in this process?

9 Art Stays International Festival of Contemporary Art

Digital artist and theorist Zoran Poposki will present a video performance and hold a lecture within the 9. International Festival of Contemporary Arts "ArtStays" and Summer Academy of Contemporary Arts in Ptuj, Slovenia on 28 July 2011.

The 9. festival edition is comprised of about 50 new projects by established and young international artists from the United States, Singapore, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Poland, Russia etc. The festival is part of the 2012 Maribor European Capital of Culture.

Poposki will present a video performance in a public space, whereas the lecture will focus on several of his projects regarding the relationship between the socially engaged art practice and social-political issues originating from the transformation of urban space in Skopje, challenges related to art operations in the public sphere, as well as tactics for interaction with diverse publics.

* UPDATE: The public art project Monument: 1000 Alexandras WILL NOT TAKE PLACE in the planned location (City Media's LED video display at the main square in Skopje, Macedonia), due to a last-minute cancellation by the company operating the video billboard, without any explanation.

This comes after a previous denial of permit by the municipal authorities to do the public art project in the form of a projection onto the newly-erected statue of Alexander the Great in Skopje's central square.

Made up of randomly chosen female names found on social networks of current citizens of Skopje named Alexandra, 1000 Alexandras is conceived as a multimedia monument to all Alexandras currently living in Skopje. Questioning cultural and material values, conventions and authorities, Poposki's projects celebrate the importance of the ordinary and the overlooked in his tactical use of instruments of historic memory creation/glorification. Continually calling for a celebration of the present, of the creative power of the everyday and the multitude, their aim is to create a new urban alphabet of the topographic, political and affective idiosyncrasies of public spaces in Skopje.

Covering an area of 140m2 and centrally located in the main square of the city, 1000 Alexandras is a multimedia monument to all Alexandras currently living in Skopje , made up of randomly chosen names found on social media sites. Originally conceived as a projection/intervention onto the recently erected monument of Alexander the Great (Warrior on a Horse), the project is realized in its present form due to fact that it was not granted a permit from the municipal authorities.

Zoran Poposki's projects in public space rely on Situationist tactics to explore possibilities for collective intervention into the urban geography. Questioning cultural and material values, conventions and authorities, Poposki's projects celebrate the importance of the ordinary and the overlooked in his tactical use of instruments of historic memory creation/glorification. Continually calling for a celebration of the present, of the creative power of the everyday and the multitude, their aim is to create a new urban alphabet of the topographic, political and affective idiosyncrasies of public spaces in Skopje.

As a space shared by all citizens, public space is a major source of local identity. Moreover, public space is the place where people communicate and interact with each other and engage in discourse on issues of public concern and is therefore a prerequisite for public freedom. Thus the right and the necessity for citizens to use public space as something that belongs to them and as a place for public debate and engagement in public discourse.

1000 Alexandras is part of the exhibition Skopje: between science and fiction, curated by Jovanka Popova, as part of the festival Skopje Summer 2011.

Public spaces are sites of interaction, encounter, and communication. Shared by all, the public sphere is also a source of local identity, and a place where heterogeneous groups assert this identity. Since it is also a space of exclusion, this right to representation must be continuously reasserted. Zoran Poposki will discuss several of his projects that focus on the relationship between socially engaged artistic practice and the sociopolitical concerns rising from the transformation of urban space in Skopje, Macedonia. In his lecture he will address the challenges of working in the public arena and what it means to attempt to engage different publics.

Zoran Poposki is a transdisciplinary artist and theorist based in Skopje. His work explores issues of liminality, identity, and public space and has been exhibited internationally. He is the author of “Prostori na mokta” (Spaces of Power, Skopje: Templum, 2009).

Victoria Hindley is an artist, writer, and independent curator. She works primarily with photography, language, the book form, and in collaboration with others. Her work challenges the cultural construction of meaning(s) through applying strategies of decoding such as abstraction, humor, and decontextualization as a way of investigating representations, stereotypes, and other naturalized concepts. Victoria studied literature, semiotics, and visual arts in the US and Europe and has a BA in Literature and a MFA in Visual Art. Her work has been exhibited and collected internationally since the early 90s; she currently teaches at Transart Institute in Berlin/New York.

The Conference is to be held at Queen’s University Belfast on 19 – 21 May 2011. It is organised by the Conflict in Cities and the Contested State ESRC Research Project (2007 – 2012) and partly sponsored by the World Bank's World Development Report 2011 - Conflict, Security and Development.

This is a multi-disciplinary conference with a focus on the nature and dynamics of ethno-national conflicts as manifested in contested cities. Conversely, it questions how cities and everyday urban life are used - and abused - in the containment of these wider national conflicts, and it explores their potential for achieving the self-sustaining moderation, constructive channelling or resolution of conflict. It aims to enhance dialogue between academics and non-academic urban policy practitioners and community activists working in such contested cities.

The conference adopts a multi-dimensional and multi-level approach to ethno-nationally divided cities, historical and contemporary. It incorporates questions of empire, national state and city interrelationships, international and historical comparisons, city planning and regeneration, political, economic and cultural developments, everyday life, violence, resistance and agonistic urbanism.

The conference will include plenary and parallel sessions, round table discussions and a guided tour of Belfast’s ‘peacewalls’ and ‘shared spaces’. The opening keynote address will be given by Saskia Sassen.

The publication From Consideration to Commitment: Art in Critical Confrontation to Society (Belgrade, Ljubljana, Skopje, Zagreb: 1990-2010), created as part of the regional project Let’s Talk Critic Arts, will be presented on April 11 at 7 pm at the Art Center of the University Library “Svetozar Marković” in Belgrade.

The publication explores practices of critical contemporary fine arts – practices of research, progressive and experimental actions by contemporary fine artists from the 1990s to the present, in four countries in the region – Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. These are practices which focus on issues such as identity aspects (national, cultural, religious, ethnic), workers’ rights, social integration of minorities, global market fluctuation trends and its impact in the local context, unscrupulousness of capital, the position of women, spatial devastation, art institution system issues, and many others.

Contemporary visual art is discussed through the works and experiences of Igor Grubić, Sanja Iveković, Andreja Kulunčić and Darko Šimičić (Croatia), Stevan Vuković, Milica Tomić, Danilo Prnjat and Živko Grozdanić Gera (Serbia), Neven Korda, Marko Peljhan, Marija Mojca Pungerčar and Maja Smrekar (Slovenia), and Bojan Ivanov, Zoran Poposki, Mira Gakina and Žaneta Vangeli (Macedonia).

The publication maps out and theoretically reviews critical and research practices, and contemporary fine arts practices oriented towards the contemporary civilization moment, which have been active in the context of the independent cultural scene since the 1990s, but which have also been present in the institutional frame. The authors provide only drafts of the political, social, economic and cultural changes of the local contexts, through four segments, due to a lack of space. Each segment focuses on the practices and context of a given country, i.e. the capital as the primary focus, and in addition to the introductory word by the authors, it includes interviews (with authors, theorists, curators, organizers…) who contribute to the recording of these artistic practices based on their experience, work and knowledge.

The segments deal with the Belgrade, Ljubljana, Skopje, and Zagreb scenes. All the authors devised their approaches in an effort to present the fruitful and creative production of these cities, to the greatest extent possible. The authors involved in the creation of this publication are Jasna Jakšić (in collaboration with Tihana Bertek, Maja Gujinović, Ana Kovačić, Srđan Latrezom, Petar Novak, Tino Novak, Tamara Sertić and Leda Sutlović) from Croatia, Nebojša Vilić from Macedonia, Vesna Tašić (in collaboration with Vesna Milosavljević and Miroljub Marjanović) from Serbia, and Miha Colner and Nika Grabar (Slovenia).

The authors of the segments faced a gruelling task – how to tell the story of a period on only 50 pages (which was predefined for every segment), and how to select only four protagonists for every city, among the many protagonists of the art scene? The authors applied different criteria – they strived to select precisely those respondents who could provide a cross-section of the discipline development, some were selected because their work is a paradigmatic of critical and socially engaging practices, while some were inescapable authoritative and creative minds…

The publication is a type of platform that is available to the public, with the wish to encourage further collecting and evaluation of art and cultural endeavours in the past 20 year in these four cities, as well as in those that could not be included in this project.

The book was conceived as a multilingual publication in English, in addition to the local languages (Croatia, Macedonian, Serbian and Slovenian), in order to enable better insight into contemporary artistic practices in post-Yugoslav cities both for the local and international public.

The publication is available for free download under the Creative Commons Licence Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported unless it is not differently stated. The publication will be also distributed in CD form to galleries in Belgrade, Ljubljana, Skopje and Zagreb.

The LTCA project will be concluded by promotion of the publication From Consideration to Commitment: Art in Critical Confrontation to Society (Belgrade, Ljubljana, Skopje, Zagreb: 1990-2010), but it is open for comment and further research.

NYHEDSAVISEN: PUBLIC-INTERFACES is a fake newspaper presenting cutting edge research in an accessible FREE tabloid format. The newspaper is a 100% genuine copy of the famous Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

The increasing demand for publication of academic peer-reviewed journal articles must be met. Unfortunate examples demonstrate that this may lead to plagiarism. This is not a viable solution. Research must be original and academia is not lacking original content. But perhaps researchers need new visions of how to produce research? Perhaps the readers need new ways of consuming research? Why not imagine academic research as something that can be consumed on a daily basis, in the train or at the breakfast table?

On April 1, at 13 am, NYHEDSAVISEN: PUBLIC-INTERFACES will be handed out to the public at the metro station ‘DR Byen/Universitetet’ in Copenhagen as well as at the central railway station in Aarhus and the State Library. Also, issues will be tactically placed in selected free newspaper stands and at University lunchrooms worldwide.

Emerging from the Digital Aesthetics Research Center and the Center for Digital Urban Living (Aarhus University), the aim of NYHEDSAVISEN: PUBLIC-INTERFACES is to encompass the changing concept of the ’public’. This is the result of an ongoing research in the computer interface.

CONTENT: Our starting point is that the computer interface is a cultural paradigm affecting not only our creative production and presentation of the world but also our perception of the world. We recognize that in the past decade, interfaces have been expanding from the graphical user interface of the computer to meet the needs of different new technologies, uses, cultures and contexts: they are more mobile, networked, ubiquitous, and embedded in the environment and architecture, part of regeneration agendas and new aesthetic and cultural practices, etc.. NYHEDSAVISEN: PUBLIC-INTERFACES investigates these new interfaces that affect relations between public and private realms, and generate new forms urban spaces and activities, new forms of exchange and new forms of creative production.

The newspaper is organised into thematic strands (URBAN, ART, CAPITAL) and brings together researchers from diverse fields – across aesthetics, cultural theory, architecture, digital design and urban studies – united by the need to understand public interfaces and the paradigmatic changes they pose to these fields.

WINTER/SPRING 2011 BRIEF HISTORIES brings together contemporary works responsive to the unfolding events in the region and the larger global happenings of the day. Diverse participants, from six continents, present photography, moving image, installation, drawing, text, and web-based work. Themes lying within their contributions reflect upon social geography, power and authority, labor and capital, private and public space, and the media.

With telepresence of information, temporality has transformed from its traditional linear progression (past, present, future) to a coexistence of past and present–on demand. In this respect new media networks broadcast multitudes of distinct perspectives, which in turn destabilize a definitive narrative. The challenge has become to maintain a critical, artistic, and curatorial practice that is responsive and relevant, and that is capable of keeping its place amongst rapidly changing contexts and shifting meanings.

BRIEF HISTORIES is an attempt to address this need for immediacy, by bringing together artists and writers to respond with works that are significant to the context of our present day reality.

UpStart Collective launched its campaign to promote creativity during the Irish General Election 2011 on Tuesday 1st February, by reinterpreting the spaces commonly used for displaying election campaign posters in Dublin City.
1000 posters, submitted by artists, writers and poets are being put up across the centre of Dublin.
The objectives of UpStart are to encourage a debate on the role of the arts in this state, by highlighting the importance of creativity and ingenuity when society is in need of direction and solutions, and to emphasize the value of the arts to public life. The future development of the country requires a healthy cultivation of the Arts.

At CAA's 99th Annual Conference in New York from February 9-12, 2011, the ARTspace Media Lounge presents a roster of innovative video programming, with selections made by renowned artists, professors, and curators specializing in new media; they are shown on a continuous loop during the conference, featuring a different hour-long program each day.

An outstanding program is lined up for New York, featuring videos assembled by nine curators, including Boshko Boskovic, Alexander Campos, David Familian, Claudia Hart, Martha Kirszenbaum, Karen Moss, Aily Nash, Debra Riley Parr, and Catherine Sullivan. The framework for the program can best be described by the title chosen by the organizers, Band of Outsiders, the irresistible title of Jean Luc Godard’s 1964 film, which prompts the notion of a collective challenging of boundaries. The goal is to reflect the independent and adventurous mettle that has always characterized art production in New York City.

The video program Not So Distant Memory, curated by Boshko Boskovic, comprises of an hour-long presentation of video works from the territory of what used to be Yugoslavia. The approach is topographical and takes as a starting point remembrance of a place that has expired in history. The process is a simple one: connecting the dots of national groups that once cohabited within a construct through the basis of video art. Aesthetics are politics and in featuring artworks from ex-Yugoslav republics and provinces (Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia) there is a danger that the exhibition be perceived as an excessively sentimental yearning to return to a past period that once existed, namely The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1943-1992). One is fully aware that returning to the past is an irrecoverable process and the aim of this presentation is to showcase the production of recent artworks that happen to be framed upon a territory that once existed.

The works contain a multitude of voices and perspectives: from the performative and more politically engaged to the lyrical and humorous. The focus is not on developing an overarching theme or conclusion yet experiencing works from a particular region that is often neglected or esentialised by the western contemporary art world.

"Citizens should actively be involved in decision-making about what their surroundings should look like. They have the right to use and create public space. In the widest sense, citizens have the right to the city - to live and to produce public urban space through working and living in the city. The city is not just a collection of buildings, but is rather a result of the interaction between the citizens.

I want to see the city as a space of radical democracy, where citizens of every level would be involved in making decisions. Creating opportunities for dialogue between different social groups at every level. That means opening up public space into a place for dialogue and debate, as well as space for the representation of different social groups.

My thesis is that art necessarily requires public space. Art is by its nature dialogic - it addresses the other in order to engage into a process of communication and exchange."

The Public Interfaces conference and Ph.D. workshop brings together researchers from Aarhus University, University of Plymouth, and guests to address the broad theme of Public Interfaces. It is organised by the Centre for Digital Urban Living (DUL), Digital Aesthetics Research Centre (DARC), and Dept. of Aesthetic Studies, Aarhus University.

Emerging from DUL and DARC's ongoing research around interface criticism, the aim is to broaden issues to encompass the development of urban interfaces, and the changing concept of the 'public'.

The following questions act as points of departure:

Whilst experimentation and developments in the culture of free software reflects emergent and self-organizing public actions, how does this modify our understanding of public interfaces? Can the public interface be used as a useful concept for understanding changing relations between public and private realms within other fields? Does the public interface offer a way of further examining relational aesthetics, the cultural regeneration agenda and public art? Does the public interface provide new understandings of the relationship between creative production and the free market sphere? How does the possible dissolution of the public and private spheres relate to bio politics and contemporary forms of power? Does the public interface suggest new borders or even the dissolution of borders between the public and private, humans and machines, the centre and periphery?

The conference and workshop are organised into three thematic strands: Art as public interface; The public interfaces of urban space; The public interface and capital.

From Northern Nevada to all corners in America - - from Macedonia and Greece, to Sweden and French Canada, this large survey-style exhibition presents sixty-six artists, including one collaboration, exploring the theme of self-portraiture. Perhaps considered just the folly of indulgent navel-gazing, the self-portrait continues to be important and interesting because it not only provides varied perspectives of the artist looking back on the self in circumstance, but rather also provides cultural, political and social insight into the time period and conditions under which the art was made. In a growing globalization, how we reflect the times we live in is subject matter that crosses the unsteady boundaries of nation, race, gender, religion, political affiliation, age, class, etc. The exhibition demonstrates that humor, pop culture, health, irony, history, intellectual debates, idealism and story-telling are ever-present undertones to how artists express themselves, whether they use self-portraiture as rare device, or as regular all-encompassing investigative tool.

All media, regardless of size, are in the exhibition, including printmaking, fiber, painting, drawing, photography, animation, performance, sticker art, video, sculpture and interdisciplinary media.

OthersToSpecify will be presented on October 25th, 5-9 pm at BIG SCREEN PROJECT, 6th Avenue and 29th Street in New York, with reception starting at 7 pm.

The Big Screen Project is an innovative presentation model for video, film, live and interactive content. It consists of a large 30 ft. x 16.5 ft. HD Format LED screen located at the 10,000 sq. ft. public plaza behind a new 54-story multi-use building on Sixth Avenue between 29th and 30th Street in New York City. Zoran Poposki is a recipient of the 2010 ArtsLink Fellowship, awarded by CEC ArtsLink, an international arts organization based in New York.

The ArtsLink Residencies program offers artists and arts managers from Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus a five-week residency at an established non-profit arts organization in the US. Host organizations are selected by CEC staff from an application process open to US non-profit organizations in all fifty US states. ArtsLink Residencies incorporate the visiting professional into the host organization’s activities and provide interaction with local artists and organizations.

As a 2010 ArtsLink Fellow, in October-November 2010 Zoran Poposki will be artist in residence at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. Straight from artist Zoran Poposki's living room, and co-produced by curator Goran Gjorgievski, comes the latest performance in urban public space in Skopje, entitled "Portrait of the Artist as a Cultural Worker".

In this performative tryptich (composed of the performances "Thesis", "Sweet Movie", and "Working Class Hero"), Poposki reflects on his artistic practice focused almost exclusively on public space as a place for representation and discursive action.

Poposki's performance is realized as part of "Curatorial Workshop", a project by Goran Gjorgievski, curator at the National Gallery of Macedonia - Mala Stanica. Curatorial Workshop is conceived as a project where the curator is photographed with the artist in the context of his/her work.

The third edition of Video in Progress exhibition project, curated by Kolektiva, is the result of international competition on the subject of performance for video. The 46 selected videos, featuring various formal and conceptual premises, present a heterogeneous interpretation of performance in relation to video within contemporary visual art. Everything from regular performance in front of audience in a gallery to an exhibitionist and voyeuristic presentation of a body as an aesthetic object, absurd actions, exploration of identity, social and political roles, subjective views, narratives and the creation of film or documentary atmosphere.

Zoran Poposki's video performance Here has been selected by the Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) in Puerto Rico to be shown at Museo de Arte de Ponce in Plaza las Americas MAP @ PLAZA, San Juan.

As a preview to the symposia Encounter with the Art Blogs: Puerto Rico and Beyond, MAP will screen Refresh: Projections of New Media at MAP. Refresh will include artists from Puerto Rico, USA, Canada, Germany, and Macedonia.

The concept of Refresh comes from the browser's refresh button, which allows a static page to update information that has changed. Refreshing is tantamount to restoring strength, animation, and stimulation. MAP is, in addition to renewing its building and reinstalling its collection, "willing to send a new signal: a museum open to new ways of connecting with a young community of artists and the public," as stated by MAP's Assistant Curator Maria Arlette de la Serna, coordinator of this event in collaboration with Carmen Olmo-Terrasa.

Zoran Poposki’s latest project, PUBLIC SPACE: Right to the City (2008-2009), was presented at the main city square in Skopje, Macedonia, on 23 June 2009. Utilizing situationist tactics and focused on a collective utopian intervention into urban geography, this year-long participatory art project explores issues of “ownership” of public space, as well as citizens’ power to “write” urban memory as represented by the names of public space in the city of Skopje, thus reappropriating the urban landscape which belongs to all citizens.

As a space shared by all citizens, public space is one of the main sources of local identity. Furthermore, public space is where citizens communicate and interact with each other and become engaged in public matters, and is thus a precondition for public freedom. Thus the right, as well as the necessity, for the citizens to use public space as something which belongs to them and as a place for public debate and engaging in public discourse.

Phase one of the project started in October 2008, with a publication of an open call to the citizens of Skopje for “submitting proposals for changes to the names of streets, bridges, parks and squares in Skopje”, published on 8 October 2008 as an ad in the largest daily newspaper in Macedonia, “Dnevnik”. The open call states:

The city of Skopje is not defined by its buildings or other facilities. This city is defined by its inhabitants, with their family ties, labor relations, with their knowledge and actions. It is not made up of the past, but of the present which is continuously being created by the people living in it. Public spaces in the city, such as squares, parks, streets and bridges, which belong to all citizens, should reflect that fact. They should carry the names of people living and working in this city today, celebrate each one of us and not just historic figures. They should mark important dates in our lives, and not the past.

Therefore, fellow citizens, we call upon you to suggest new names for the public spaces in our cit. Let’s name them after:
- current inhabitants of Skopje who are good parents, partners, friends, neighbors, collaborators;
- dates marking important events in our everyday lives (birthdays, weddings, etc.);
- our favorite things, such as colors, sounds, activities, etc.

Please submit your proposals along with a brief explanation (no more than half a page) online at www.public-space.info or mail them to CC Tocka, 6 Antonio Grubisic, 1000 Skopje. All proposals will be forwarded to the Skopje City Council.

In the second stage, realized as part of the Skopje Cultural Summer 09, all proposals by the citizens of Skopje collected in the previous nine months were included in a new map of Skopje, exhibited as a billboard on the central square in Skopje for a period of one week, along with a one-day performance by the artist. A survey of passers-by was conducted, to explore their opinion on public spaces in Skopje and solicit new proposals. All collected proposals, with documentation of the process, will be officially submitted to the Skopje City Council.

Poposki exhibits documentation of his public art project "Abstract Politics". Conceived as a series of abstract prints for billboards installed as megalights on the busiest streets in Skopje, this project aims to reclaim commercially usurped public space for artistic purposes. As space shared by all citizens, public space is where individuals see and are seen by others as they engage in public affairs and is thus a precondition for “public freedom” (Hannah Arendt).

The Abstract Politics series of digital prints for billboards draws upon a wide array of artistic strategies traditionally used by abstraction (the liberating power of randomness, chaos, gestures), while at the same time recontextualizing them and translating them into the language of new media. The starting point in the process is the media, i.e. news coverage of national and global political issues. In the contemporary, digital version of the aleatory principle, the headline is searched in Google Images, and the search results thus obtained serve as raw material which is later digitally edited.

A collaborative art project by Zoran Poposki (Macedonia), Eva Petric (Slovenia/Austria) and Markuz Wernli Saito (Switzerland/Japan), has been awarded at an international competition for public art projects in the Basque city of Sondika, Spain.

In competition with 203 projects from 38 countries, including the United States, Germany, Austria, Canada, Columbia, China, South Korea, Turkey, Finland, France and Venezuela, the art trio acting under the name Z + E + M Collective was shortlisted among the five finalists and received special mention.
The project, entitled “Recipe Benches,” is a multimedia installation in public space focused on the enormous creative and utopian potential of food, as one of the key features of Sondika's identity.

Works by the Macedonian digital artist Zoran Poposki will be presented in two international shows in the US and Turkey this February.

From 6 to 29 February 2008, Poposki will take part in the international exhibition Borderlands at the Art Gallery of the South Seattle Community College in Seattle, USA. “Borderlands aims to deal with the concept of political borders and how these borders affect people in the global community politically, emotionally, and socially. Work will be featured by artists from Macedonia to Seattle”, states the exhibition’s catalogue. At the exhibition Zoran Poposki will present a work from his multimedia project The Border, which addresses the issue of (im)permeability of borders in today’s global configurations by means of video, performance, digital prints and objects.

Zoran Poposki's Here is a video performance (6:37 minutes, produced by Jane Stefanov) about the relationship between personal and collective identity, as well as the limitations of the local, symbolized by the artist’s attempt to get into a traditional Macedonian dress. The title is “Here”, in the sense that the individual is always already present in his or her own culture.

The costume is one that the artist's grandmother made herself when she was just a little girl, 70 years ago, as part of her dowry for her groom to be - Poposki's grandfather who lived in five different countries without ever leaving his home (borders are a pretty fluid thing in the Balkans).

The background music is a loop of the opening beats of a famous Macedonian folk dance (in fact, it is the folk dance, the ur-dance of all Macedonian dances, or "oro" as it's called in Macedonia). Called "Teshkoto" ("the heavy one"), it's a slow folk dance that gradually picks up the pace, danced exclusively by men.

In Zoran Poposki's participatory project Travels, a life-size cutout of the artist is mailed to people in several countries for them to "show" it around the country and send back photographs of it with some recognizable landmark in the background. All cut-outs go through customs controls etc., probing most of the institutional aspects and agents related to borders. The image is intentionally pixelated, to underscore the virtual nature of the endeavor. The artist’s double/s goes on tour around the world, “visiting” Sydney, Los Angeles/Hollywood, Oxford, Paris, Copenhagen, etc., bringing in more than 100 photographs by various contributors.

Fortress Europe

Fortress Europe (2007) is a 79x47 inches print of a digitally edited 1960s found photograph of the Berlin Wall, in which the artist Zoran Poposki places himself in the right corner.
On the photograph, people from the Western part of Berlin are peeking over the wall built by the Russians and into the Eastern part. The fall of the Berlin Wall, which had been the symbol of divided Europe for 30 years, signaled the start of the unification of Europe. However, nowadays the perception in the Balkans is that now Europe is once again divided, and a new wall is set in place only this time by the EU itself, with countries and nations being left out (the "other" of Europe), allowed only to take a peek at the life on the other side while denied to take part in it.

Exhibition Abroad (2007) the strict visa requirements for citizens of non-EU countries in the Balkans and the difficulties involved in obtaining a Schengen visa.
In the project, the artist Zoran Poposki documents the 1.5 long process of getting a visa for his exhibition in Napoli, Italy, in the form of digital prints composed of portraits (that he would usually use as one of the components of his digital paintings, the other being randomly chosen text from works of pulp fiction and digitally edited parts of his acrylic paintings) and his correspondence with the embassy and the gallery manager.
The correspondence ranges from cordial invitation and extension of hospitality to initial disbelief at the rigid procedure and the amount of documents required for a visa application and ultimately to suspicion that maybe his case is an exception and not a rule.
In a sense, this part of the project is a meta-exhibition since several of the portraits were turned into digital paintings that were exhibited in Italy.
The final product consists of five 35x28 inch digital prints mounted on forex, entitled “Exhibition abroad”, composed of a black-and-white digital photograph and text in chronological order.

A thin line between cultures and expanses of the soul. An ideal boundary that separates, but does not divide, two different artistic sensibilities codified in two very different stylistic codes. Entitled “Border”, the joint exhibition of Michele D'Alterio and Zoran Poposki takes place at Ramo d’Oro, the Art and Culture Center of Vincenzo Montella at via Omodeo 124.

(…) An explosive gestural energy, which wants to break out of the confines of the canvas, characterizes the works of Zoran Poposki, a Macedonian artists who, after New York, Berlin, and Paris, is making his debut exhibition in Italy. The series “Hush” comprises eight digital works (large-scale inkjet prints) of psychodelic chromatisms, which explore the interconnection between the visible and the written word. “In this project I am elaborating the idea of change – he explains – by combining digital photographs of my friends, pictorial elements, such as vibrant drops and lines of color, and inserted selected words." Utilizing a Dadaist technique, the photographed subjects were requested to randomly open a book and choose the first sentence they see. Words that acquire different meanings depending of the sensibility of the spectator. Sentences sometimes intentionally left unfinished to leave room for individual imagination to complete them.

An exhibition by the Macedonian artist Zoran Poposki and the Italian artist Michele D’Alterio opens to the public at the gallery “Il Ramo D’Oro” in Napoli on 14 April 2007. The exhibition is conceived as a confrontation of two expressive experiences, the abstract and expressionist one of Poposki and the surrealist and conceptual one of D’Alterio. Poposki exhibits large-scale digital prints that elaborate the issue of identity and the relationship between images and language/text/narratives.

In the exhibition catalogue, the Italian critic Giorgio Agnisola states that: “The Macedonian artist unleashes onto the canvas a gestural and abstract energy, tied to the evocation of color but also to the expressive techniques of the sign, in a multilayered construct out of which often emerge figurative forms, profiles that seem to be creating a sort of inner scenography. Still, in the creative stage it is exorcised through rational interventions, phrases, signs, thoughts, that the artist applies to the painting, provocatively, with the intent to demystify. That results in a visible ambiguity that evokes in the spectator a conscious and intensive analysis of the word and the image, in a space which is emotionally engaging while at the same time problematic, unknown in a way, yet encouraging.”

Zoran Poposki has exhibited in New York, Paris, Berlin, and Macedonia. He has attended residency programs in the US and in Austria.

The exhibition comprises large-scale digital prints and photographs from the cycle “Hush”, created in 2006-2007.

Poposki’s work explores the hidden interconnections between the visual and the written word. Or more specifically, how pictures and narratives are intertwined in the attempt to tell our personal histories, but at the same time they subvert each other, their union sometimes producing unexpected (even ironic) results.

Looking back, I think it is safe to say that 2006 was action-packed for me in terms of exhibitions: a solo show in Paris in spring, a couple of group shows in New York in the summer/autumn, and another solo show in Berlin this winter. Plus an odd one back home and two residencies abroad: at the School of Visual Arts in New York and another one at the Transart Institute (at the O.K. Center for Contemporary Art in Linz, Austria).

The shows went great - both with the critics and the audience. Let me just mention the juried international exhibition in Huntington, NY, where out of 580 entries from all over the world, one of the most distinguished US art critics prof. Donald Kuspit of Stony Brook University selected my digital print "Marija" to be among the 24 artworks in the exhibition (see photo below).

2007 looks promising as well - with shows scheduled in Italy, Macedonia and Germany.

Exhibition in Ohrid

Solo exhibition of my digital prints will be held at the National Institution Cultural Center "Grigor Prlicev" in Ohrid, Macedonia.

The exhibition will present 8 large-scale digital prints from the cycle "Hush", created in 2005-2006. My digital prints explore the hidden interconnections between the visual and the written word. Or more specifically, how pictures and narratives are intertwined in the attempt to tell our personal histories, but at the same time they subvert each other, their union sometimes producing unexpected (even ironic) results.

The exhibition is realized upon invitation by the Mayor of Ohrid, on occasion of the Day of Ohrid, and will be open until December 20, 2006.

Exhibition in Berlin

(Vreme, 22.11.2006) - Solo show of Macedonian artist Zoran Poposki will be opened at “Gallery 24” in Berlin on Wednesday evening. The artist presents large-format digital prints from the cycle “Hush”, created in the period 2005/2006.

"After this year’s solo exhibition in Paris and two group exhibitions in New York, it is a pleasure to present my artworks to the German public”, artist Poposki says.

Poposki's expressionist digital portraits represent a combination of digital photography and his recognizable visual writing, marked by the great abstract traditions of modernity, primarily abstract expressionism and post-painterly abstraction. His digital expressionist portraits deal with the issue of authorship and identity through a psycho-analytically inspired type of abstract expressionism.

Exhibition in the US: Zoran Poposki exhibits with 24 world artists

(Vreme, 01.09.2006) - Macedonian artist Zoran Poposki is taking part in an international exhibition at the Alpan Gallery in Huntington, New York on 2-27 September. An open competition was announced and 24 works including Poposki’s digital print “Marija” have been selected amongst 580 works by artists from the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Britain, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa and Switzerland.

The selection was made by one of the US most renowned art critics, Donald Kuspit, Professor at the New York State University in Stony Brook and editor of the influential art magazine Artforum.

Poposki’s digital expressionist portraits elaborate the question of authorship and identity through a psychoanalysis-inspired abstract expressionism.

Digital Color Artist of the Month

Zoran is an accomplished abstract expressionist painter and graphic artist from Macedonia. His work has been featured in national TV programs, newspapers and magazines.

Zoran takes a passionate approach to painting. His expressive strokes have been compared to a squid squirting ink all around, defending itself. His paintings are a form of refined lyricism, more emotional than intellectual."
